My graduate project for web
My graduate project for web design will be the following:
You will be responsible for coming up with your own Graduate project. You will need to come up with your own project idea and develop a strong concept behind that project. A part of this must be a strong research component.
I could give you a direction, but after talking to several of you, it was clear that everyone has a different direction that would help further their career. This will give you a chance to make that project you need for your personal growth and/or resume.
Of course, this should be a *much* larger project than any one of the projects, including the final project. The number of pages, images, links, and artistic elements needs to be much higher and a higher quality than anything the undergraduates are working on.
I will also need to approve your project before you start. So you will need to turn in a 1000 word proposal that highlights the need, your concept, and a bit describing what the project will physically (virtually) look like.
As always, the techniques and visual structure that you use will be entirely up to you.
So. I get to basically do whatever I want as long as its complex enough. Anybody need a complicated website I could build for them?
You should find a community site (maybe a volunteer organization) that could use some help either building or redesigning their web site...
Wow, that's kind of a cop out, isn't it? I mean, I could give you an assignment - but I won't. :)
The obvious thing would be to do some more work on your professional site, I guess. Or maybe as an exercise, you could redesign some NASA web site that bugs you with it's inefficiency and lack of public appeal.

I do! I do! My grandparents own rental houses in Elon and they have finally decided that they should have a website with listings of the houses. I told them I'd do it but anything I do is going to be basic, though I considered learning MySQL to do a database, and you do a great job. They probably would pay you too but that may be against the rules for a class project. Here's an example of a site I think is pretty functional www.coolbluerentals.com It's a Chapel Hill based company that owns properties. Of course the community group idea is really good too.
Hmm. Brian that is a really tempting idea. I actually don't know database stuff (it's not covered in the class), so that's my initial concern, but I might be willing to try to figure it out as well...

The database isn't necessary, I just thought it would be cool to learn and make the website more "professional."
HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAA....I want an assignment like that: do whatever you want and make it good. Oh, wait. . .I have a whole job like that!

Okay, now I feel way to guilty to suggest you do my work website. Way too self-serving as is my decision to ski in Tahoe instead of finding a way to help in NO for the week. No good karma left.

I've been thinking about doing the Red Cross emergency responder training. A lot of times when these disasters happen a lot of people want to volunteer but they don't have the specialized training to go into the disaster area...
(Hey, if you want to help out NO residents, I think there are some organizations in Houston supporting the evacuees that are still here - you could come stay with me :) ).
Thanks! I'll talk to my gparents and see if they were actually serious (they seemed like it but this is new territory for them). I can do the photography of the houses etc... The are supposed to be coming up with a url and I was looking at dreamhost as a host so you would get the ref on that. I'll also see if they'd be willing to pay.
